Helping a Child Who Has Been a Victim of Sexual Assault

What Is Child Sexual Assault?

A child is sexually assaulted when he or she is improperly exposed to sexual activity or behavior by anyone left in the care of the child, or if someone takes advantage of the child. The victim may be male or female.

In many cases, sexual assault on a child may only occur once, since it is often a stranger that is responsible for the assault. The vast majority of child sexual abuse occurs in the home and often continues over the course of several years.
