Stalking and Criminal Harassment
A criminal harassment offense is when someone purposefully follows and harasses another person repeatedly, with the intent to threaten their safety or the safety of others. It is a criminal offense for anyone to harass you, including someone you know or a complete stranger.
Forms of harassment could include:
- Repeatedly following you
- Frequent and unwanted telephone calls
- Unwanted letters, gifts or other objects
- Unwanted Internet contact
- Watching you, your home or your workplace
- Someone repeatedly being a visible presence in places you often go
Note:
Charges do not have to be laid.
Victims of crime can get a monetary benefit to acknowledge victimization, based on the injuries directly suffered from the crime.
Remember:
- Stalking is not your fault
- You are not responsible for what the stalker thinks or does
- Stalking is against the law
- Stalking is a crime called criminal harassment
- Always seek help when dealing with stalking or harassment
