Reporting a Sexual Assault

3 Ways To Report a Sexual Assault

1. Call the Police

You can report a sexual assault by calling 911 or by calling the Red Deer City RCMP Complaint line at 403-343-5575.

Depending on when the assault took place, police may attend the scene, take you to the hospital, or request that you come to the police station to report it.

In some cases, Red Deer City Police may request that the Red Deer City Victim Services Unit attend the detachment and/or hospital to provide you with support, information and community referrals. Generally, the Sexual Assault Response Team at Red Deer Hospital will provide the first level of support if you’re in the hospital.

2. Attend a Police Station

Additionally, you can go to a police station to report the incident.

You may receive support, information, and referrals to the community from the Red Deer City Victim Services Unit.

Note:

Red Deer City Victim Services Unit is here to assist you by proving you support, information and community referrals.

3. Attend the Hospital

If you have been sexually assaulted, you should tell the triage nurse in the emergency department and  ask to be seen by the SART (Sexual Assault Response Team) nurse. A team of female Registered Nurses, known as the Sexual Assault Response Team, has been specifically trained to treat people who have been sexually assaulted within the past 72 hours. Nurses from SART respond to sexual assault calls 24 hours a day, and most of the time they arrive within an hour of receiving the call.

The police are not automatically notified of the assault when you request a SART nurse. You will be asked if you wish to contact the police by the SART nurse. A SART nurse will conduct a physical exam as well as genital exam if you do not wish to report. In addition, she will assess your risk for STIs and if you’re female, your pregnancy risk.

As a result, the nurse will discuss various treatment options, including emergency contraception and medicines to combat sexually transmitted diseases. Also included is information on the next steps in medical treatment.
