Breaking and entering a home occurs when someone breaks into the home without permission and commits a crime, or plans to commit a crime. Break-ins often involve the theft of valuable items. Illegal entry is a serious crime regardless of whether it involves small or inexpensive property.

There are emotional as well as financial consequences to crime. Residential burglaries can occur anywhere, regardless of age, gender, economic background, or culture. The majority of criminals do not know their victims or do not target them personally. The victims and their families face emotional repercussions due to residential break-ins, despite the varied reactions to these crimes.
